James Courtney will miss the Sydney 500
The Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney will miss V8 Supercars’ season-ending Sydney 500 at Sydney Olympic Park on 6-8 December.
The 2010 V8 Supercars Champion was injured in a spectacular crash in the first race for the Sargent Security Phillip Island 360 last Saturday.
Courtney’s HRT Commodore was impacted heavily on the driver’s side by Alex Premat’s car, which had left the circuit at high speed due to a tyre puncture. Premat assisted Courtney from his car.
Both drivers were taken to the circuit medical centre and underwent immediate examination, with both later released.
Courtney returned home to the Gold Coast Sunday morning and on medical advice from Dr Carl Le, V8 Supercars Medical Delegate, underwent further examinations yesterday with an MRI scan revealing a fractured tibia and a tear in his right-side quad muscle.
Although this means that James will be on crutches for the next six weeks, his injury will fully heal in plenty of time for the new season.
“The scan showed a fracture to my tibia, and a tear in my quad muscle. It’s quite painful but I’m doing alright and it’s good to know what the damage is,” Courtney said.
“Unfortunately I won’t be racing at the Sydney 500, it’s my hometown race and always exciting. Being a racer I would be out there right now if I could but it’s better to get the recovery process started so I come back firing on all eight cylinders next season.”
Holden Racing Team Managing Director, Steve Hallam said Courtney’s recovery was his and the team’s number one priority.
“Our immediate concern is for James and while we understand he is disappointed to be missing the Sydney 500 on doctor’s advice we are firm in that it is best for him to focus entirely on his recovery,” Hallam said.
“Nick Percat will replace James for the event. Nick has a long history with the Holden Racing Team and Walkinshaw Racing and we appreciate Nick making himself available.”

Re: 2013 V8 Supercars Discussion
DICK Johnson has declared he is out of "hell'' after he ended an eight year horror story on Wednesday by finally securing his race team's future.
The Daily Telegraph can reveal the Ford legend's V8 legacy will continue next year with Dick Johnson Racing signing a new driver, securing a major sponsor for two years and buying a second racing license for the 2014 season.
Johnson, who has been locked in a bitter financial struggle since 2005, said he would finally be able to sleep after Wilson Security agreed to fund his expanded racing operation for the next two years.
"How it all didn't kill me I don't know?'' Johnson said.

"But I am not only still standing, but finally have a smile on my face because it is all worked out. 12 months ago I couldn't eat or sleep. I thought the team was doomed. But now we have a bright financial future and I am going about planning how we will win races next year instead of thinking about how I will get us to a race.''
Wilson Security saved Johnson from extinction earlier this year with a temporary deal getting him on the grid for race one. Johnson almost gave up on the season with the deal only signed a week before the season opening Clipsal 500 in Adelaide. The dramatic preseason also saw Johnson sack his own son Steven in a bid to secure another a sponsor.
"I thought I ate some poisoned cake at Christmas,'' Johnson said.
"It was the most stressful time of my life. I thought I was too old at times to deal with it but I will never walk away from a fight.''
Johnson has been on the brink of destruction since 2005 when a major sponsor collapsed. A series of rushed deals saw the legend face creditors before stitching up rushed deals with new backers. He sold a license and part of his business to Charlie Schwerkolt before a bitter bust up threatened to end his team again.
"It has been a tough journey,'' Johnson said.
"But even when the sh*t was hitting the fan, we won a championship. We also won a race this year and we will be looking to do plenty more of that now we can make racing our priority again.''
Wilson Security will abandon and deal with a rival team and fund both of Johnson's entries. Johnson revealed he has signed emerging driver Scott Pye to lead his charge in his famous No.17 entry with another driver to soon be announced. Johnson has bought a second license with Paul Morris parting with his REC.
"Scotty will be our No.1 if you like,'' Johnson said.
"And we will be able to announce another driver soon. We have a second license now and that is the way it needs to be. You need to have a two car deal in this sport to be any chance and we have that now.''
Johnson sold his second license to Schwerkolt in 2010 and a fallout between the pair saw the later take the famous No.18 to Ford Performance Racing.
"I am also getting a brand new number,'' Johnson said.
"I will be running No.16 with my No.17.''
Johnson is hoping departing FPR driver Chaz Mostert will end his horror year on a high note this weekend at the Sydney 500.
"A win would be nice,'' Johnson said.
"And we are a bloody good chance at this one. We will give it a red-hot go.''

Re: 2013 V8 Supercars Discussion
wow what a finish to the year. championship well won by JDub in what were 2 great drives from the little champ sat & sun
I cant believe he was tapping brighty with the championship on the line late in final race, I was screaming at him to just sit and wait.
He must have been very nervous watching the 2 cars in front of him nearly wiping themselves and very likely himself out of the championship.
Lowndsey just didn't have the luck with him this w/end.
Davo dropping in for 3rd with his ticket punched to greener pastures was a surpise.
Winterbottom is a great driver but have to say he didn't handle the pressure end of the season well at all, very unlucky getting wiped out on sat and he is one of the best drivers in the game.
didn't enjoy his shunt of Lowndsey after CL passed him in the chicane, a blatant agro bump which cost him in the end.
Nice to see the Giz win, and Brighty well even in his interview on getting 2nd he still couldn't crack a smile, ive decided I will remove my hate for the chipmunk (courtney) as he has lost his god complex and move it to Brighty who seems to suck lemons all day.
Great result for Ingall finishing in the top10 in his last race, an epic career that deserves mention, really drove well. had to laugh as he tapped slades merc for a few laps with his own car (slades ride for 2014).
Red Bull were always fav's for this year but sometimes it harder to win when you are the favourite so a big congrats to them for not only winning but their professional approach to the entire game, it shows in the paddock and on the track, and also getting the 1-2.
Bring in the Volvos's and anyone else who drops into the best racing category going atm imo, cant wait for more manufacturers, its been good to watch.
Holden = Winners! you bewdy!
