Forza 4 demo out tonight.

I'd have to disagree on the detail front. Despite the track being rather simple and probably not the best representation of FM4, i'd have to say it is much much much more enjoyable to look at than the FM3 fictional settings. Hell those FM3 fictionals look cartoony to me.

edit: I also refuse to get into the GT vs FM "debate". Many things i'd like to say, but no, i'm not getting my hands dirty.

Yup I agree with this, also the lighting model looks to be WAYYYYYYYY imporved over the "glare or nothing" of Forza 3 with its dull colors & blinding glare in the sunlight. Also remember a 1.2 gig demo is surely going to be missing alot of the extra detail that the full game will have.

If you don't believe me think back to the forza 3 demo, scratchy as anything compared to the actual game & only 1 track, but the base driving model (good) was there. I think this is the same situation...

also this demo has been around since E3 all those months ago so the final game quality im sure will be a whole lot better.

Agreed.

Bumper cam gives you a real sense of speed. Bit scary at times.

Have to say that this is a noticeable aspect when playing in cockpit view. The difference between FM3 and FM4 is gladly appreciated. Also like how you've got a high FOV but can also look around now, so you can now actually appreciate the detail on the inside, which has also increased.

oh the lighting is better, it now serves to hide the lack of detail in the game. go back and watch the intro screens for Fujimi, Camino and Almalfi and then this...this isn't on the same planet. rock formations don't look natural (very squarish) and the textures are far more garish on them.
trees now have that cardboard cut-out look. while in FM3 they didn't have thier colours always right at least they looked 'in' the game and had depth.
at points watching replays two areas show this becuase there is less dark shadows and the scene is closer. when the cars are coming through the fast chicane section and there are bushes and overhanging branches. they are so flat and unbelievably pixelated they look like they were jacked out of GT4. and details like fence posts and rails have a flat shaded colour. at least they actually used textures for that kind of thing in FM3.
i'm very worried these traits are going to be carried over into existing tracks. will be interesting to see how photos will look in the game now.
oh and regards driving physics i have now put my finger on the game it reminds me of...it's half NFS Shift. p!ssweak!
at least the interior view looks better...

i've used both with this now, but i will be using the controller mostly just out of convenience. i used normal steering but found it felt too assisted so i am running with the sim setting.

Perhaps its not such a big issue to me as i've never really expected much out of a console racer. If it were PC it would be a different story, but really, so long as it looks overall better in FM4 compared to FM3 (which to me, it does), i'm not fussed.

And honestly, at 200km/h, the detail of the surrounds is not that important to me. So long as it looks nice, and the cars look even better, i'm happy.

edit: Agreed on the simulation steering front, definitely the best option.

Seems we're getting some serious judgements on a very limited demo view of the game.

To each his own, but I'll hold off my judgement until I get the full game and understand the setup options that we can use for controller/wheel. But initial impressions are that the different steering options are interesting and provide some realism and support, depending on your prefs.

As for secenery and car look, I think its a ++ improvement over FM3 which was also way better that FM2.
If you doubt that, dust off the old disks and refresh your memory

Good point Wolf. Demo's will always cause discussion though.

I'm still looking forwards to the full version, and I definitely disagree with Ted regarding it handling like NFS Shift 2. That was terrible! This is much better and felt a bit more intense than FM3 without being completely random like NFSS2 was.

It's a demo - it's meant to sell the game to people that are on the fence... The nature of the beast meant it's going to provoke opinion.

That's where my two cents get thrown in;

I really can't agree with Ted either. NFS Shift this certainly is not. Shift became drivable if you stuck at it - and 'learned' how to drive the Shift way.. To me the demo's handling characteristics seem far more intuitive - and until I convince myself otherwise I'm attributing that feeling to a lean towards realism rather than away from it.

I personally haven't really taken the time to really examine the environment - but I've been playing FM3 for a couple of years, and haven't bothered to look too hard there either......

had a bit of a bash on it today .. have to say i think its not to bad for what they gave us.. and sound of that pagani F@k me swwwweeeeeeet as..

Guess to me FM4 just needs to be that step in front of FM3.. The visuals of the game so far is awesome.. Could see some great photo spots when the end of race footage was playing.. The sound seems better then FM3.. again that pagani sounds the shit !!

cant really comment on the wheel controls as i have been using the controler in the past.. and felt pretty much the same to me as FM3 on controler.. Playing on the wheel now is completly diffent feel to the game. So how they have setup as standard is good enough for me for now..

After the little teaser they have given us im looking forward to the release of the full game to see what they have done with customization and the rest of the game. im like a fat kid in macas whos whos just been brought a choc sundae and then told i have to wait till the weekend to eat it.

F4 Looks like a game i will surely put a good amount of hrs in playing.. weither online or offline..

Oh god don't start on the sound of the Pagani. The shriek it gives at the top end as it fluctuates the revs dear LORD that is sweet.

...except for the music which is the worst demo, forced, music ever. way to kill off hours of pre recorded correct engine sounds(or not as per the above posts about the subaru sounds, sounded right to me)
