Oculus Rift 3D gaming
Been keeping an eye on the development of the Oculus Rift for awhile, the DK2 is now being shipped from US. At $350us + shipping its becoming a very interesting alternative to a new TV, and 1/2 the price, I know thats its not the consumer version. Suspect its another year away, but at 1080 per eye, the development has come along way.
As for car racing, (no support for Forza, yet) but A/C and Pcars is supporting. take a look at the youtube vids,
Is it the next big thing !.
this vid was created with Dk1, lower resolution, larger head set unit, but its intent is to see the scope of vision, (i think the guy is more interested in the wow factor than anything else, lol)
This one is a DK2 version, with a little more seriousness and with 100deg of FOV,and the ability to look in to the corners is something far more natural.

Re: Oculus Rift 3D gaming
What a co-incidence, i'm so close to purchasing one myself. AC is apparently a bit buggy with the DK2 since its not 100% supported, but given their history it should be coming along soon.
Fantastic times to be in PC gaming. Heres a good example of a cheap build that is actually really powerful. In Australian monies (+Australia tax) from PCCaseGear that comes to $800.
edit: Aaaaaaaaaaaand i just ordered mine.

i7 4790k - running @ 4.7 Ghz ( havn't tried to overclock any higher yet, but the chip is a good one so may hit 5.0 if the temp dont go to high)
ASRock Z97 Extreme4 MB
Sapphire R9 290 4GB OC
HyperX 16GB RAM @ 1866 mhz
HyperX 3K 120GB SSD x 2
Corsair RM850 PSU
NZXT X61 AIO Liquid Cooling System
NZXT H440 Case
plus some extra cables, corsair fans, keyboard and 27" IPS monitor
it a beast, but I use it all day for work and have just got into gaming on it.
PCCG put a post on Facebook about it last week

Nice, wish my cabling was that neat... I'm terrible at sorting that out better.
PC gaming is definitely getting better all the time, so many great games.
Oculus rift would be awesome, definitely looks like the future to me...

Re: Oculus Rift 3D gaming
After a bit more research, I found out that FaceBook had bought out OR, for an estimated 2 billion, ( 400 mill cash, 1.6 bill in shares)
So what u say, it may bring the final product into the market sooner!, it may also tie up software and TErms and Conditions with its social media crap! Will it increase the final purchase price or reduce the quallity build!. Could the value of OR be down graded in the future and never get to market. OR was a kickstart initiative, so I didn't think money was an issue.
Ps: danno, what this hijacking my only thread this yr with that beast of a machine, lol. A bit of overkill for a office Ms box, I know word and excel is bloated these days.. Nice rig btw.

Re: Oculus Rift 3D gaming
After thinkn about this more, ( bad thing) what a kick in the butt for kichstarter initiative, Facebook never invested anything in OR, ordinary gamers did with a vision of realizing the potential of VR. Now Facebook has very little to do with gaming, well at least in my uneducated knowledge. So r they going to change the direction of OR to a non-gaming direction, who knows
Feel sorry for those who funded OR, to see them sold out, but that's life in the fast lane !

I'd be guessing (hoping) that you will be able to output to TV simultaneously for spectator pleasure?
And very nice looking PC Danno - you should get those radiator hoses braided.

Re: Oculus Rift 3D gaming
Kinda, to my understanding, it runs as a second monitor. However being a 3D application it projects 2 images, one for the left eye and one for the right. So the monitor will display a kinda binocular view in 3D. With the RGB colour lookn out of sync.
The clips I've seen have been obtained by capturing one of the eyes view.

Re: Oculus Rift 3D gaming
Could be even more interesting for the spectators then - many TVs are 3D now anyway, so I wonder if there is a possibility for spectators to watch in 3D
