Loic Duval suffers horrifying crash during Le Mans practice

Loic Duval in awake and alert after a massive accident during practice today. From the extensive damage to the catch fencing, it appears that the car went airborne.
The crash took place at the exit of the Porsche Curves. Radio Le Mans has reported that he conscious and talking after being extracted from the Audi and taken away in an ambulance.

Update on Loics condition: He is alert. He will be transported from the Medical Center to the hospital for further examinations.

Duval will not be allowed to race this weekend at Le Mans

Doctors will not allow Loic Duval to race this weekend after his terrifying accident earlier today. It was reported that he only suffered scratches on his legs and arms, but he's not being cleared to race. It's unfortunate news for Duval who was hoping to defend his Le Mans title with teammates Tom Kristensen and Lucas Di Grassi.
This decision was made after he underwent some more tests at the hospital. JOTA Sport's Marc Gene will replace him as the third driver of the No. 1 Audi. Gene won the overall crown at Le Mans for Peugeot back in 2009 and competed for Audi in both 2012 and 2013.

The Spaniard was originally scheduled to drive the No. 38 Zytek-Nissan for the JOTA Sport team in LMP2.

The Audi sport team is working 24/7 to rebuild the car, which was ripped in half and completely destroyed in the accident.

Toyota's Kazuki Nakajima earns pole for 24 Hours of Le Mans



For the first time since 1999, a Toyota will lead the field to the green flag for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Kazuki Nakajima also makes history as the first Japanese racer to ever earn pole position for Le Mans with a time of three minutes and 21.789 seconds.

The No. 14 Porsche placed second, the No. 8 Toyota third, and the No. 20 Porsche fourth. Audi will start behind all of their main rivals, placing fifth (No. 2), sixth (No. 3), and seventh (No. 1) on the grid.

LMP2

Tristan Gommendy in the Thiriet by TDS Racing Ligier JS P2 Nissan earned pole honors in the LMP2 category. He was able to outpace the No. 38 JOTA Sport Zytek-Nissan in second and the No. 35 Oak Racing Ligier-Nissan in third.



GTE Pro

In GTE Pro, Gianmaria Bruni put the No. 51 AF Corse Ferrari on top, ahead of the No. 73 Corvette and No. 97 Aston Martin.



GTE Am

Another AF Corse Ferrari snagged pole position in GTE Am with Sam Bird in the No. 81 entry. He was followed by a fleet of Aston Martins in second (No. 98), third (No. 95), and fourth (No. 61).



As teams readied themselves for one last bid at pole in the final 15 minutes, a crash tarnished all plans and left us with an anticlimactic ending. The accident involved Karun Chandhok in the No. 48 Murphy Oreca-Nissan. The section in and around Indianapolis was placed under a local yellow, which obviously put an end to anyones hopes of improving their time.

Bret Curtis will not be allowed to race after crashing the No. 79 ProSpeed Porsche. The team will withdrawal if a replacement chassis can not be acquired.

The Nissan ZEOD qualified 26th, beating the leading GTE car by 3.5 seconds, but falling approximately 6.7 seconds short of the last-place LMP2 prototype.

The ACO has revealed that a number of cars are under investigation for speeding in 'slow zones.'

Kevin Estre and McLaren shatter qualifying lap record for Nürburgring 24



During Friday's Top-30 Shootout at the Nürburgring, Dorr Motorsport's Kevin Estre threw down a time that no other team could match. His lap of 8:10.921, is the fastest ever in qualifying for this event, which has taken place since 1970. He will share the car with Peter Kox, Tim Mullen and Sascha Bert in their search for victory.

This marks the first Nürburgring 24 pole for both Estre and the McLaren MP4-12C. The No. 25 BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc GT3 machine of Maxime Martin came the closest to the blistering fast MP4, but he was still 2.576 seconds adrift of the pole lap.

Christian Mamerow drove the Phoenix Racing Audi R8 to third on the grid, followed by the No. 14 Black Falcon team. Their No. 9 Mercedes SLS AMG took overall honors in 2013. BMW rounded out the top five with Dirk Werner in the No. 19. The session ran without incident.

This grueling 24 hour endurance race on the Nordschleife will get underway at 4pm local time tomorrow.
