4G Wireless Modems

Looking into 4G wireless internet leading into the Xbox One release.

Whilst I wont be in my landline-less shack in Cessnock for too much longer (moving to Newcastle to be closer to work), I have decided that I would still rather go down the path of 4G rather than hardwired ADSL. Just the  (potential) speeds are more appealing. Optus actually rolled out their 4G network testing in Newcastle so if there is any place in the country where it would be reliable it would be Newy. Like most things with Telstra, their 4G is ruled out due to price this time but Exetel uses Optus 4G coverage where I can get 10gb per month for $40. Compared to $65 @ 7gb with 3G Telstra last year, seems like a good deal (price wise). Only 12 month contract too. Its only for Xbox use, I wont be using a PC (besides initial installation and setup).

Anyway Ive got that part confidently sorted out, but just needing help with suitable 4G modems, if anyone has any first hand experience. With the above mentioned Exetel deal, you can "bring your own modem" or use the standard (free) USB modem or upgrade to the optional device which is the Optus/Huawei E5776 WiFi Modem (extra $5 a month). Optus claim you can connect up to 5 devices including gaming consoles, but its still a small little unit and perhaps not as powerful in gaining reception as a big bludger of a thing like the Thompson unit I had with Telstra. That's my only gripe about not getting that optional modem. If there was a unit where I could attach an extra antenna/booster would be advantageous.  

Anyones input would be appreciated and handy!

Hi Mitch, not sure on wireless and potential speeds vs congestion, but interesting at 10gb, hence my post here and been wondering how much data the new Xbox1 will use, with cloud powering, updates, downloads for games, online purchases, maybe Skype youtube or a movie or two ect, and most importantly online gameplay, might be worth looking into that or non contract type for now to see if 10gb data would be enough..

Yeah fair points there. I wont be Skyping or YT'ing or any other stuff on mine. In theory, you should still be able to save a game properly on the HDD, and its only me on the Xbox and I dont play many games beyond Forza and a few of the usual shooters sooo hopefully 10gb would be more than fine with me.

Just a small warning with wifi and in particular with 3G 4G, the latency will kill you. 

I work for the Gov. and oversee the installation of internet in a wide variety of schools.  We have tested many times the pros and cons with wired verses wireless and using wireless for gaming is near impossible.  You will think you have killed someone in a shoot em up and you will have already died according to the rest of the gaming party.

Just our observations, Wired is far better than Wireless at this stage.

Oh and the Qld Gov uses Telstra for WAN connectivity and these connections are dedicated...  not shared like most privately available bandwidth.

I did have Telstra 3G for 12 months and I didn't have one problem during gaming at all but....I could be at dial-up speeds (data quota used) aaand still going alright on COD!
